Spring '10 Force.com Platform Release
Sophisticated Data Modeling

Do you want to create complex data models by having chained master-detail relationships? Do you want to be able to have a report pulling data from all the levels of your complex data model? With Spring ’10, you will be able to create multi-level master-detail relationships! In particular:

  • Create up to three child levels of master-detail relations
  • Rollup your data from the deepest child level all the way to the parent
  • Reports pulling data from all the levels of your complex data model

As an example, using a master-detail-subdetail relationship, you can calculate a candidate's total rating or overall average based on the Review object data: Candidate (master custom object)—Job Application (detail custom object)—Review (subdetail custom object)

See the article A Deeper look at SOQL and Relationship Queries on Force.com for further examples.
