Sites Self-Registration enables your users to visit your site, register their account, and be up in running with valuable customer information provided on your portal. Under the covers, the registration is achieved through a new Apex method, createPersonAccountPortalUser(), which creates a new Person account.

Note that Person Accounts can only be enabled as high-volume portal users.
